what is moodle?Moodle is an open-source, free, learning platform aka Virtual Learning Environment or Course Management System. Moodle arose from educationally focused Ph.D. reseach and is designed to help teachers, tutors, academics, facilitators and moderators create, deliver and manage online courses with opportunities for rich interaction. It has a significant user base with 38,896 registered sites with 16,927,590 users in 1,713,438 courses (as of January, 2008). Moodle has been maturing ever since 1999 and it now offers a powerful functionality that can meet learning management goals in almost any organisation and scenario. Moodle is developed using an open source philosophy and can be deployed with no licence fee implications. Its basis on a social constructionist pedagogy is manifested through the large number of synchronous and asynchronous collaboration features it boasts. It is SCORM conformant and can be quickly deployed on most platforms. The licence model and impressive range of "out of the box" features has enabled Moodle to make significant inroads into many organisations, across the education, public and private sectors. My experience with Moodle has been highly positive and reinforces my view that there are few virgin learning management scenarios where Moodle should not feature as a serious contender.
